The New International Space Station!

Welcome to the first weekly STEMLeap Spotlight! Each week, we bring you something new and exciting from the STEM world to spark your imagination. This week, we’re turning our eyes to the stars to check out the new International Space Station (ISS)!

The International Space Station (ISS) has been a symbol of global collaboration and scientific discovery for over 20 years. But did you know that plans are underway to build a new one?

The current ISS has been orbiting Earth since 1998, and astronauts from all around the world have called it home– but it’s getting old, and maintenance will soon be unfeasible.  That’s why engineers are designing the next-generation ISS to continue in its wake. The new space station will provide a platform for scientific research, developing new technologies, and space exploration.

What’s so impressive about the new ISS?

One of the most exciting technologies that is expected to be in the new ISS is an artificial gravity system. Unlike the current ISS, which operates entirely in microgravity, the new station may include sections that simulate gravity. By spinning parts of the station, the ISS will create centrifugal force to mimic the effects of gravity. Just like science fiction!

This is your chance to get inspired and think about how you could contribute to space exploration. Will you be the next astronaut, engineer, or scientist aboard the ISS? The sky—no, the stars—are the limit!
